This is one of the coolest behind the scenes shots I got while filming Blessed Pt. 2. Our crew was AMAZING! Seriously, I was in awe, watching them work. In addition to their tremendous skill, I credit our director, Jen Derwingson and our producer, John Hermann, for this well-oiled machine called Blessed the production! Thank you everyone!
We shot a lot in three days. Two on sight at Kiona's home and on the streets near there and then on the 3rd day, we shot outside a liquor store downtown, did a full company move over lunch and completed at the Herald Examiner for the cop shop/attorney scenes. Brilliant!
What's next for Blessed? What's going to happen in 2015?
More brilliance is the plan! lol!
We have pick-ups and then post. Our post production team is coming together, which is really exciting! Once they've worked their magic then Through The Wilderness, LLC is going to party!
Yes- it will be time to celebrate with cast, crew and supporters!! We'll be doing a company launch, too...around our one year anniversary!
After that, Blessed will be released to the world at film festivals while garnering support for a feature. YUP- WRITING THE FEATURE!
(Okay..not 'WRITING' much yet, but scenes are flooding my head... and I'm excited!)
Kiona has a dilemna. She has some deep questions she'll need to answer while working hard to save her family, to mend her broken heart and uphold the law. It will be an action-packed film that I feel so proud to able to tell! I'll keep ya all posted!
IN THE MEANTIME- I will be using this blog for a series of essays I'm working on about female cop characters in film., females of color as leads in action films and yes yes...MORE!!
I often repost on Facebook or retweet (@throughwild) posts about the dismal numbers of women making film and the NEED for this to change! We just saw the Oscar nominations and like a lot of smart folks, were outraged! But we, like so many other artists I know, must take that energy and focus it on creating more content. WE have to write, direct, and produce the stories, the films, that continue to change not only what cinema looks like, but what it FEELS like. Film is an experience...so let's keep changing it so it reflects the true world we live in.
When I retweet I always ask for "More"...and I say "PLEASE", cuz I was raised with some manners, ya know? Well, it dawned on me while reading another commentary on how Selma got snubbed ( Ava DuVernay got snubbed which..makes me furious) that maybe the whole "MORE, PLEASE" is too much of a gentle ask. It was originally meant for like-minded filmmakers who are creating film like Blessed and Selma and Drunktown's Finest and a whole host of other incredible films by FOC's about FOC'S (Folks of Color) to keep going. To make more. And for them, I'm all about using my manners.
But now..for the Industry...'asking' for more, 'asking' the industry to make more doesn't seem to fit. One...asking falls on deaf ears and myopic shadowed eyes that can't see the brilliance in films like Selma or just can't see through their own white crap cloud to get here...to where we are. Two...there's a time to ask and a time to DO. Let's just DO.
More films. Telling the underpresented stories of the voices that have gone unheard. What's really exciting and making me grin like a mad magician while typing that is that... those voices are being heard... ti's happening.! And THAT'S what Through The Wilderness will be doing in 2015!
