After receiving devastating news, an Olympic hopeful falls into a spirit world where she must pass a test or die trying.
Seppuku is a Japanese-American cinematic folk tale that chronicles the ritual death and rebirth of Mari Yoshimori. It looks through the lens of a psyche molded through generations by the legacy of internment, a tragic event tucked away in the dark corners of America’s past. It’s a soul-searching journey to recalibrate a spiritual compass and find new purpose in life.
Seppuku is the first of many creative collaborations for TTW's Peter Parshall Jensen and writer/director, Daryn Wakasa. This haunting Japanese American folktale was co-written by the two plus Jensen serves as co-producer.
In addition to the love we have for this story, the spiritual journey Mari is forced to take, it was the exquisite cinamatic vision of Daryn Wakasa that drew us to go deeper with this project beyond co-writing. This film also gave Through The Wilderness the opportunity to co-executive produce with Wakasa's Foment Films and Rouge Production's Lauren Kim, Mari Ueda and Kumiko Ogawa.
The first half of the beautiful film was shot in July in Los Angeles. And currently, the team prepares for a three day shoot in Manzanar, the preserved internment camp tucked along the Sierra Mountains north of Los Angeles.
Becoming creative partners in this film allowed Through The Wilderness to be part of the Seppuku family of artists, visionaries and storytellers.
